How to Make Your Songs Available to the Universe.

By Wayne Weiner, D.Ed.

The other day, I was driving down the highway, belting out tunes like I was auditioning for The Voice. My radio was set to Spotify, and just as I hit the crescendo of my off-key masterpiece, I heard something that nearly made me drive off the road. Yes, Bob and Sheldon, I can see you nodding in agreement—you’ve been passengers in my car and know my driving isn’t always the safest. But this wasn’t due to my less-than-perfect alignment with the lane markers. No, it was because I heard one of my songs playing!

That’s right, one of my songs, sent out into the vast musical galaxy by none other than DistroKid. For those unfamiliar with this digital wonder, DistroKid is a distribution platform that sends your music to every imaginable streaming service. We’re talking Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, TikTok, and even a few platforms so obscure that their user base probably consists of just the programmers’ mothers.

A Digital Musical Highway
Here’s how DistroKid works: you upload your song, choose the platforms you want it on, pay a nominal fee, and voilà! Your tunes are beamed to the far corners of the internet. You don’t have to beg your cousin with a garage band to let you open for them anymore. Instead, your audience can be anyone with Wi-Fi and a decent taste in music.

It’s like being invited to a potluck where you don’t have to bring anything except the playlist. And the best part? It’s effortless—no haggling with record executives or selling your soul to the devil at the crossroads (though that does make for a great story).

Introducing… New Stratum!
My songs, under the name New Stratum, have found their way onto countless platforms. I imagine they’re floating through space as we speak, possibly reaching extraterrestrial listeners. NASA might get a response someday:
“Dear Earth, we intercepted New Stratum. Thanks for the tunes! P.S. Please stop beaming reality TV shows; they’re bad for intergalactic relations.”

But I digress. If you want to hear my music for free (yes, I said FREE), head over to my URL: https://drweinerinsights.com. You’ll find tracks ranging from soulful ballads to foot-stomping anthems—basically, a little something for everyone, including aliens.

The Road Ahead
As I reflected on hearing my song on Spotify, I realized that creating music is only half the journey. Sharing it is the other half, and thanks to platforms like DistroKid, that’s now easier than ever. Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a seasoned musician, or just someone who thinks their shower songs deserve an audience, DistroKid might be your ticket to the universe.

So, next time you’re driving, keep an ear out. You never know—you might hear a tune that makes you want to pull over and dance on the shoulder of the road. (Not that I recommend doing that. Bob and Sheldon, you’ve seen me attempt to dance—thankfully, no traffic laws were broken.)

And who knows? One of those songs might just be mine.
