Songwriting is a funny thing. Sometimes, the words come to you like a gift from the heavens, and other times, you wrestle with a single line for hours, only to realize it was better the way you first wrote it. Over the years, I’ve written my fair share of songs—some country, some humorous, and others that make you reflect on life in a way only music can.
I wouldn’t call myself a great songwriter, but I know this: every song I’ve written came from a place of truth. Some were inspired by history, like “Bring Back the Country of Texas Republic of Texas,” which taps into the independent spirit that still lingers in the Lone Star State. Others were written just for fun, like a song I once wrote about words mattering more than people think—because, let’s face it, sometimes we all say things we wish we hadn’t.
One of my personal favorites is a song about resilience. It doesn’t have a fancy title, just a simple message: life is tough, but so are you. That’s the kind of song that sticks with people because, no matter who you are, you’ve had days where you needed to hear it.
I also love songs that make you smile. I’ve written lyrics that poke fun at the absurdity of life, politicians, and even the way people communicate (or fail to). One time, I wrote a song that wondered what heaven would be like if it had bureaucracy. I imagine there’d be a long line at the pearly gates, and St. Peter might need an assistant just to keep up with the paperwork.
But the best songs—the ones I’m proudest of—are the ones that connect. When someone tells me a lyric spoke to them, helped them through something, or even just made them laugh, that’s when I know I did something right.
Songwriting isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about finding the right words for the right moment and hoping they land where they need to. So, these are my favorite songs I wrote—not because they’re flawless, but because they mean something to me. And if they mean something to you, well, that’s music to my ears.
