Sippin’ Time in the Port of Possibility

I wrote a little tune the other day, Diet Coke in hand—no ice, but plenty of imagination. It’s about retirement. Not the “sit in your recliner and watch lint accumulate” kind. Nope. This one’s set in a magical port where the breeze is easy, the hammock sways just right, and your to-do list reads: nap, snack, repeat.

People say retirement means slowing down. I say it means driving your own dang bus—with the windows down and Toby Keith on the radio. You wake up when your body says “good morning,” not when an alarm clock screams like a rooster on espresso.

A buddy of mine recently retired and said, “Wayne, I now eat breakfast… at lunchtime.” That’s not laziness. That’s freedom with syrup on top.

Too many folks think retirement is the end of the road. Nah—it’s just a new on-ramp. You might head down a dusty trail where you take up painting, or cruise Route 66 with your sweetheart, your playlist, and no GPS. Just vibes.

You’re not retiring from something. You’re retiring to something.

It’s the season of porch chats, backyard BBQs, unplanned road trips, and those legendary fishing stories—where the fish was either 12 inches… or just very confident.

One client told me, “Wayne, retirement gave me time to find my curiosity again.” Now he builds model trains, writes poetry, and occasionally gets lost in his own backyard—but always with a grin.

Retirement isn’t an escape—it’s an arrival. All those early mornings, late nights, and awkward Zoom meetings were your ticket to the good stuff. Now’s the time to dance barefoot on the dock, sip something cold, and remind yourself: you didn’t just age—you leveled up.

Like the great country philosopher Toby Keith sang, “Don’t let the old man in.” Or the old woman. Or the grumpy neighbor. Or the voice in your head that still thinks khakis are a personality.

Welcome to the Port of Possibility.
No map needed. Just drop anchor wherever joy finds you.

Retirement’s not the last act—it’s a new band, better lighting, and your kind of music.

So grab your sunhat, cue the soundtrack, and let’s sail toward the sunset—with laughter in our hearts and sand between our toes.
