What Does “Unfolding Your Thinking” Really Mean?

By Wayne Weiner, D.Ed.
Former Senior Consultant and soon to launch my Network Utopia Channel

Unfolding your thinking is not a party trick, a buzzword, or a phrase you put on a tote bag. It’s a practice—like yoga for your brain—but with fewer stretches and more “Aha!” moments. I chose it as my personal mantra not to impress anyone, but to express something deeply real: the belief that our best ideas aren’t behind us—they’re trapped inside us, folded up like origami swans, waiting to fly.

So what does it mean to unfold your thinking?

A Mindset, Not a Moment
It starts with permission. You give yourself permission to pause, question, and reconsider. Most of us are raised to believe that having an answer is the end of the story. But when you unfold your thinking, the answer is just the beginning. You’re no longer interested in just defending your beliefs—you want to understand them, test them, and sometimes rewire them.

As a former senior leadership consultant, I saw this unfold (pun intended) in real time. When executives stopped hiding behind jargon and instead asked, “What if we’re wrong?” or “What aren’t we seeing?”—that’s when transformation happened. Not when they had all the answers, but when they had the courage to ask better questions.

Why I Chose It
I didn’t choose this phrase because it sounds poetic (though it does). I chose it because it works. I’ve seen people go from rigid and reactive to curious and creative. I’ve experienced it myself.

Unfolding your thinking opens you up to possibility—not chaos. It’s not about becoming a wobbly mess of indecision. It’s about learning how to stretch beyond the familiar, without snapping in half. It helped me realize that most of my breakthroughs didn’t come during the times I was “right”—they came when I let go of being right long enough to grow.

Let me be clear: this is not about bragging. This is not me announcing that I have transcended the human condition and now live in a yurt made of wisdom. This is about choosing a path that invites humility and depth. It’s about showing up for your own evolution—one folded thought at a time.

What Have I Noticed?
Since adopting this mindset, I’ve become more forgiving of myself and others. I listen better. I pause longer. I’m less likely to bulldoze a conversation just because I think I know where it’s going.

I’ve also seen better outcomes in the work I do, particularly with teams. When people feel safe to think out loud—to unfold their thinking without fear of being “wrong”—they innovate. They connect. They stop playing mental hide-and-seek and start collaborating.

And soon, with the launch of my Network Utopia Channel, I’ll be exploring these themes even more—bringing together people who are tired of the noise and ready for something deeper, smarter, and more honest. It’s not a place for fluff. It’s a place for grown-up thinking, unboxed.

Final Thought
In origami, a single sheet of paper—if folded just right—can become a crane, a dragon, or a flower. But when you unfold it, you see the path that brought it there. That’s what unfolding your thinking does. It helps you see not just what you believe, but how you got there. And sometimes, that’s even more powerful.
